Middle School English will offer you the opportunity to challenge your writing skills, improve your reading level, and develop your comprehension abilities.
The following are a few of the topics we will cover:
We will read a variety of short stories from the Literature Bronze and Gold books. Novels will be read as a class including a historical fiction selection. We will also complete a research paper as part of the Effective Communicator curriculum.
Interpretation of poetry in preparation for the NYS CCSS ELA Exam
SPELLING, VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR:
The students will be responsible for weekly and mini lessons which will include identifying parts of speech and reading for understanding based on context clues. Knowledge will be assessed with quizzes to reinforce the lessons.
Writing folders, which will include Effective Communicator character analysis, compare and contrast assignments, response writing and literature logs. We will also complete a journal entry at the beginning of class each day.
Students will complete two to four book reports this year. The reports will cover a variety of genres and will have optional written or oral formats. Students will be responsible for reading a total (including the assigned novels and book reports) of twenty five books throughout the year.
