Middle School English will offer you the opportunity to improve your reading level and develop your comprehension abilities, challenge your writing skills, become a more polished presenter and sharpen your listening skills.

The following are a few of the topics we will cover:

    READING             Prose, poetry and non-fiction

We will read a variety of short stories from the Literature Bronze book. Novels will be read as a class including Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen, The Outsiders by S.E.Hinton and Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai. Poetry selections will be paired with other readings.

Writing folders, which will include Effective Communicator compare and contrast assignments, response writing and literature logs. We will also complete a journal entry at the beginning of class each day. We will also complete a research paper as part of the Effective Communicator curriculum.

The students will be responsible for weekly and mini lessons which will include identifying parts of speech and reading for understanding based on context clues. Knowledge will be assessed with quizzes to reinforce the lessons.

Students will complete four book reports this year. The reports will cover a variety of genres and will have optional written or oral formats.   Students will be responsible for reading a total (including the assigned novels and book reports) of twenty five books throughout the year.
