VVS Kindergarten Philosophy of Education and Grading:
We believe there is no single way of assessing what a child has learned. That is why in kindergarten we use a variety of assessments including portfolios, chapter and unit assessments, quarterly assessments, standardized reading and comprehension assessments, as well as, informal assessments. We take into consideration the whole child; the skills and abilities that he or she had when they first entered kindergarten and the progress that each individual student has made, keeping in mind where they need to be when they leave kindergarten. We view grading as a way to report to parents and students the areas in which their child and themselves are successful and those in which they need to continue to work on.

DIBELS Reading Assessment (January, April, June)
We have calculated the marking period grades to coincide with theNew York State standards. Each quarterly assessment has been created to reflect material taught during that quarter. Grades are calculated as follows:
Students who have mastered 85-100% of material taught score a 4. These children are meeting the learning standards with distinction.
Students who have mastered 65-84% of material taught score a 3. These children are meeting the learning standards.
Students who have mastered 55-64% of material taught score a 2. These children are partially meeting the learning standards.
Students who have mastered less than 55% of material taught score a 1. These children are not meeting the learning standards.
