CHARACTER EDUCATION PROGRAM
Leadership at Vernon Elementary School

Hi folks -

We look forward to continuing our leadership initiative that was started in the 2010/2011 school year.  One major facet of the program includes students in grades 2-6 applying for and earning service positions in our school.  Some of the positions include: administrative assistant; event planner; kindergarten assistant; and among many others, graphic artist.  Not only do these positions provide another niche for our students, but they also better connect the students to our staff while nurturing leadership skills and responsibility.
Similarly, we continue to develop our student council, which is spearheaded by Ms. Stadtmiller. Every year we hold a student council convention which includes students vying for officer positions giving speeches in front of the assembled school.  We then have students in grades 2-6 vote online for candidates running for these different positions.
We also continue to provide lessons on the 8 Habits of Highly Effective People, while making our school environment more purposeful and connected to leadership.
These are just a few of the examples of the work we do with our students regarding character education.  Below are some of the artifacts highlighting this initiative including the May 2011 and May 2012 BOE presentation.

                                  Thanks - Mr. Pompo
